“One out of every four kids I see in my practice shows early signs of obesity. It's an increasing concern,” states Dr. Elba-Julie Quinones, MD and pediatrician at Swedish Covenant Hospital .
The number of children who are overweight has increased more than 50 percent over the past two decades. And here in Chicago, where the winters are cold and long, children who are overweight need extra encouragement and a stimulating environment where they can engage in physical activities.
Launched by the Galter LifeCenter our Adolescent Weight Program, geared to 12-15-year olds, teaches participants and their parents about nutrition and exercise. Teens enjoy an assortment of physical activities such as kickboxing, aerobics and strength training in a fun, non-competitive and supportive environment.
