Swedish Covenant Hospital is one of the only Chicago hospitals offering a new radiation therapy for breast cancer — Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy.
This breakthrough treatment can help reduce the traditional treatment time of breast cancer radiation — from 5-8 weeks down to 5 days — and also minimizes the risks associated with radiation during the early stages of cancer.
The Chicago Tribune recently featured an article about electronic brachytherapy being offered at Swedish Covenant Hospital. Read the article here >
How Does It Work?
Electronic Brachytherapy is different from traditional therapies because a miniaturized electronic X-Ray provides the therapeutic dose of radiation directly to your cancer site. This method makes radiation safer for you, since it reduces the amount of radiation that reaches your heart, lungs, bones and surrounding areas.
The Electronic Brachytherapy technology was developed by Xoft, a company dedicated to providing innovative, effective and safe medical products for radiation oncology applications.
Wwat Are The Benefits?
Since the radiation is delivered directly to the cancer site, room-shielding requirements are at a minimum. This means that the procedure can be done in examination rooms, and your clinician can stay in the room with you to make you feel more comfortable. Also, the machine can be switched on and off easily to enhance your safety, and your clinician can tailor the dose exactly for you.
