Patient and Family Support Services

At Swedish Covenant Hospital, we know that it takes an entire community to support a patient with cancer—from family and friends to support groups and other organizations. Here are just a few of the resources available to patients of Swedish Covenant Hospital:

Breast Cancer Recovery Program

Our Breast Cancer Recovery Program is based on a strong partnership between each patient's health care team and access to the most current medical information. The program educates and assists patients and their families, enabling them to make the best decisions related to breast cancer management. For more information, call (773) 878-8200, ext 5437.

Cancer Wellness Center

Swedish Covenant Hospital partners with the Cancer Wellness Center, located in Northbrook, Illinois, to offer psychological support, education and empowerment to those affected by cancer. For more information, call (847) 509-9595 or visit www.cancerwellness.org.

CarePages

CarePages is a free online service for patients of Swedish Covenant Hospital and their families and friends. It's a way to keep in touch, update multiple people at once on the progress of treatment and leave encouraging messages for a loved one. Starting a CarePage is easy! Get started >

CarePartners

The CarePartner program at Swedish Covenant Hospital provides patients with a better, more effective communication strategy. Participating patients choose one person, a CarePartner, and give them the authority to discuss their medical specifics with physicians. Ask your caregiver for more information on the CarePartner program.

Gilda's Club

Gilda's Club is a free support community for men, women and children of all ages living with cancer, as well as their families and friends. Through our affiliation with Gilda's Club Chicago, we offer a place where patients can get continued support. For more information, call (312) 464-9900 or visit www.gildasclubchicago.org.

Korean Cancer Support Group

This group meets at Korean-Lakeview Presbyterian Church in Niles on the 4th Thursday of each month from 7:00pm - 8:30pm. The facilitator at Swedish Covenant Hospital is Dr. Joseph Philip, who is joined by a chaplain and support staff from the hospital. For more information, please contact Stephen Chang, one of the hospital's chaplains, at (773) 878-8200 ext. 5365.

Laughter Yoga

Anyone can laugh, whether you have a reason or not. Laughter Yoga is gaining world-wide recognition as a tool for good health rather than an emotion. These simple exercises increase well-being, promote a positive attitude and release stress.

And where better to destress and think positively than in our Cancer Community Center? Join us on Mondays at 10:00am for a session of Laughter Yoga designed specifically for you. Simply clap, breathe, stretch—and laugh!

Look Good...Feel Better

One of the most important aspects of treating cancer is the healing process — emotional, psychological and spiritual. Look Good...Feel Better is a step-by-step program to assist cancer patients with appearance and health concerns during treatment. The program provides guidelines for skin care, makeup maintenance, new hair looks and caring for your nails. The American Cancer Society partners with the hospital by donating new wigs to patients who experience hair loss during treatments. For many patients, following these recommendations helps maintain uplifted spirits. For more information, call (773) 878-8200, ext. 5437 or visit www.cancer.org.

Medical Ethics

Sometimes it may be hard to decide what choice is truly in the patient's best interest, or what course of treatment best reflects what a patient wants. Uncertainty can make choices difficult. Medical Ethics means going through the process of determining what is the "best" or "right" thing to do when you are uncertain, when the choices and their consequences are not evident—and when those involved disagree about what to do. To learn more about Medical Ethics or to schedule a consultation, call (773) 878-8200, ext. 1662 or visit Medical Ethics >

Palliative Care

Palliative means to "make less severe or intense; to relieve." Swedish Covenant Hospital's Palliative Care team of professionals is available to formulate the best treatment plan focused on increasing comfort and quality of life based on the patient's choices, values, religious beliefs and culture. For more information, call (773) 878-8200, ext. 5526 or visit Palliative Care >

Pastoral Care

The Pastoral Care Department provides spiritual care for patients, families and staff. Through their ministry, chaplains offer compassion, hope and a healing presence to those experiencing difficult times. For more information, call (773) 878-8200, ext. 5365 or visit Spiritual Services >

Social Work

Social workers at Swedish Covenant Hospital offer counseling and a wealth of information regarding community resources for patients and families experiencing a transition in their lives. Our social workers not only look at the person, but examine the emotional, physical and social components of their life and how they function within their environment. This examination helps our social workers offer individualized services to patients. To learn more, call (773) 878-8200, ext. 1607, or visit Social Services >
